Mountaineering

Mountaineering  is a sport in which one of  the main goals is conquering the peak of  a mountain. A large number of  mountaineers  have  different motives, and they are mainly:  challenge, enjoying  unspoilt  nature and  socializing. Mountaineering  often requires good shape, because it involves ascent,  descent, carrying  a backpack  etc.  Experience is necessary  for using  a  map, compass, altimeter  and  other equipment. Basic mountaineering equipment includes shoes, jacket,  backpack.  Equipment  list  for a serious mountaineering expedition is long. Apart  from  food and  water, it  includes  climbing  equipment (belt, prusik, connectors, ice axe, crampons, helmet, sticks ...), camping equipment  (tent, sleeping  bag, base), other equipment (sunglasses, ski goggles, torch, compass...). During ascent and descent  unforeseen circumstances can occur. Hikers must be mentally ready to stay calm  in the worst situations (fog, wind, snow, rain, lack of water and food, injuries, equipment breakdowns ...) and help the others  to finish the action safely.

Altitude  sickness
Goal of  mountaineering  is conquering  the peaks  of  high mountains. Most often these include the peaks over 2000 metres above sea level. While  climbing the high mountains  the changes in the body occur, primarily  because  air pressure decreases with an  increase in  altitude

As a result of  lower  pressure, blood is less saturated  with oxygen  than at  lower altitudes. An organism can be somewhat adjusted to these conditions. Heart beats faster, blood pressure increases. However, at higher altitudes, it is difficult for our body  to adjust. That is how  altitude sickness  occurs. Symptoms of  altitude  sickness are headaches, insomnia, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, loss of  urination  etc.  Ways to fight  altitude sickness are: to be in better condition, drink plenty of  fluids, eat well, be well acclimatised.

Acclimatization  is the gradual habituation of  the organism to high altitude. Mountaineers usually  try  to get  acclimatised by the method  of  ‘up – down’which includes the so-called  acclimatization  ascents: climbing  higher altitudes during the day, and then  descending  and  spending  the night at lower altitude.  It is only after one or more  acclimatization ascents that one can definitely keep going  toward a peak.
